Lemon battery

(எலுமிச்சை மின்கலன் )

In the lemon battery, lemon makes electricity!!!!! No it's actually Lemon acts as a battery for experiments like electrolytic solutions.

What is lemon?

  • Lemon is a citrus fruit.

  • Juice contains 5 to 6 % of Citric acid(சிட்ரிக் அமிலம் ) like pH 2.2. Once metabolized it actually becomes alkaline pH like above 7.

  • Lemons give flavor to baked goods, sauces, salad dressings, marinades, drinks, and desserts, and they are also a good source of vitamin C(வைட்டமின் சி ).

  • 58 gram (g) lemon can provide over 30 milligram (mg) of vitamin C.

Define - Battery

  • A device containing an electric cell or a series of electric cells storing energy that can be converted into electrical power.

  • Battery essential elements like Anode and Cathode.

  • Alessandro volta(அலெக்ஸெண்ட்ரா வோல்ட் )(Italian physicist) who invented the electric battery.

  Lemon battery

  • Creating a battery from a lemon is a common project in many science textbooks.
  • Copper and Zinc work well as the metals and the citric acid content of a lemon will provide the acidic solution.

  • In the lemon battery, lemon makes electricity!!!!! No it's actually Lemon acts as a battery for experiments like electrolytic solutions.

Material Required:

  • The lemon(எலுமிச்சை ):  A large, fresh, "juicy" lemon works best.
  • The nail(ஆணி)Galvanized nails are coated in zinc(ஜிங்க்).

  • The Copper wire(தாமிரகம்பி).

  • LED (Light Emitting Diode)(ஒளிஉமிழ்டையோடு ).

  • Volt meter(வோல்ட்மீட்டர்).

Working Process:

  • Take lemon to cut on to insert Galvanized zinc nail and Copper wire, this is a single cell of a battery and to  join with LED and measure the volt to use the voltmeter.

  • The zinc nail and the copper wire are called electrodes(மின்முனை ).

  • The lemon juice is called electrolyte(மின்பகுபொருள்) .

  • So inside the lemon or  electrolytic solution(மின்பகுபொருள் கலவை) , the nail like anode(-ve) and copper wire like cathode(+ve).

  • Zinc atoms dissolve into the liquid electrolyte as electrically charged ions(Zn2+), leaving 2 negatively charged electrons (e).

  • Zn → Zn2+ + 2e.This reaction is called oxidation(ஆக்சிஜனேற்றம் ).

  • While zinc is entering the electrolyte, two positively charged hydrogen ions (H+) from the electrolyte combine with two electrons at the copper electrode's surface and form an uncharged hydrogen molecule (H2).

  • 2H++ 2e → H2 . This reaction is called reduction (ஆக்சிஜன் ஒடுக்கம்).

  • So above the chemical reaction inside the electrolytic solution or lemon juice.

  • So in the electron flow where made to emit the LED and  you can measure the voltmeter and to calculate what difference from initial and final volt measures.

  • So finally we have considered that lemon does not make electricity.it actually acts as an electrolytic solution.
